The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is a ‘modern’ university, created in 1992, but its roots go back to 1828 with the founding of the ‘Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge’.
With a staff and student community of over 35.000, UCLan is located in the heart of Preston with further campuses at Westlakes in West Cumbria (nuclear and energy related research programmes) Llangollen in North Wales (outdoor education) and Burnley, our newest campus which opened in September 2009.
The University offers over 500 undergraduate courses and approximately 180 taught postgraduate programmes. UCLan has an annual turnover of over £180million and every year it indirectly contributes in the region of £300 million to the local economy.

In 2012 UCLan launches an innovative scheme to help students get the most out of their undergraduate experience:

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors at UCLan offers students the opportunity to study a variety of vocational courses. We teach subjects covering tourism, hospitality and event management, a wide variety of sports subjects, outdoor leadership and adventure sports courses along with physiotherapy, nutrition and food safety courses.
The School is based in the city of Preston, utilising the University’s multi-million pound sports complex, UCLan Sports Arena (USA) and also the UCLan outdoor centre at Llangollen.

The school strives to support all students during their time at UCLan, both academically and on a more personal level. We have a Student Liaison Officer who provides a link between students, the university and the Students’ Union, enabling students to access a wide variety of services. We also provide support for students with disabilities and for international students. We place great emphasis on learning by doing and many of our courses include work placements or sandwich years to allow students to spend time working in industry.
This programme consists of a combination of university based and physiotherapy practice based modules. On university based modules you will cover a range of areas of contemporary physiotherapy practice as well as the clinical and behavioural sciences that underpin practice. Development of your competence and transferable skills is emphasised. You will study the research process, learning how to apply current evidence to your practice. You will develop skills in reflection and critical appraisal.

Anatomy, human movement and biomechanics (practical focus)
Human Physiology
Introduction to research methods
Professional practice (including team working, ethics, personal development planning, professional frameworks)
Physiotherapy skills (practical focus)
Level 5 (Year 2)
Health promotion and public health (delivered in conjunction with an International partner University in Finland)
Physiotherapy clinical reasoning (including application of anatomy, physiology and physiotherapy skills, to pathological processes and diseases using a problem based learning approach)
Research methods in Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy practice (placement modules, including collaborative working, evidence based practice, portfolio development)
Level 6 (Year 3)
Physiotherapy practice (placement modules, including service improvement, service evaluation, portfolio development)
Exercise Referral and Physical Activity and Health
Clinical leadership, business skills and employability
Independent study - Application of research
Students have the opportunity to choose the subject for their independent study in level 6

Students will share their learning between on Campus sessions and practice placement learning. On campus teaching will be a mixture of classroom lectures, tutorials, small group discussions and practical classes, with approximately 50% of time in University spent learning practically in small groups.
There is a requirement for self-directed learning, and students will be expected to spend time outside of the classroom preparing for sessions and reading around subjects. Students practice skills on each other in the classroom before going out into contemporary physiotherapy practice and using these skills on clients.
Increasing amounts of time will be spent in the practice environment across the three years of the programme. There are opportunities for students to undertake some of their clinical placement learning abroad with our partner Universities in Europe, and the possibility of an International experiences through the UCLan Advantage.
Learning is facilitated through practical examinations, viva examinations, OSCE’s, presentations, assignments and clinical practice based assessment. There is a strong commitment to providing timely and constructive feedback for all assessments.

About the faculty
Applications received by the University are screened by the Admissions Unit based on academic qualifications (particularly GCSE/O Level profile). All applications for further consideration are seen by the Admissions Tutor for the course, who considers the academic qualifications, reference and personal statement.
Appropriate candidates are invited to an Applicant Event at the University. The event includes opportunity to tour the University’s facilities, short talk from the course leader, opportunity to speak to current students and an individual interview with one of the course team and a current third year student.

Entry to the BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy will be considered from applicants who have the following level of academic qualifications:-
GCSE/O Level: 7 passes at grade B or above including English, Mathematics and Science
Plus one of the following:
(A2) 3 passes at grade ABB including one Science, Biology/Human Biology is preferred however Psychology, Sociology & PE are acceptable. (General Studies not included).
BTEC ND: DDM profile.
Irish Leaving Certificate: AAABB (including Biology).
A relevant first degree.
Access in Science or Health (at least 30 level 3 credits at distinction level)
Overseas Applicants - If English is not your first language, you will require, in addition to other entry requirements, IELTS - 7.0 with no element below 6.5.
Self-funding part-time study is possible; applicants for this are considered on an individual basis, but entry requirements are as for full-time study.
