NICE Guidance Committee Chair roles

This is an opportunity for ACPOPC members to apply for one of the NICE Guidance Committee Chair positions. The closing date for applications is 5pm on 16th May 2018

The National Guideline Alliance (NGA), on behalf of NICE, is seeking to recruit a number of Chairs for guideline committees due to start work over the next year.

Once each guideline gets underway, the Chair will work in collaboration with the staff of the National Guideline Alliance, the Topic Adviser and the Committee over a period of approximately 24 months to develop the guideline on behalf of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

We are looking for skilled and experienced leaders with a track record of chairing multi-professional committees or working groups at a national level. Chairing a guideline committee requires strong interpersonal and team-working skills, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills. An ability to communicate complex issues to differing audiences is a vital part of this role. Applicants should have a commitment to evidence based medicine or practice, ideally with experience of guideline development processes.

Chairs are appointed for their expertise and skill in chairing groups, and although they may have some knowledge of the topic, this is not their primary role in the group. Specialist knowledge is provided by other committee members.

Between now and March 2019, the NGA are expecting to start work on the following guideline topics (this is an indicative list and is subject to change):

  • Epilepsy in children
  • Children and young people with disabilities and severe complex needs
  • Gout
  • Infant, children and young people's experience of healthcare
  • Social work interventions for adults with complex needs (including adults with learning disabilities) and mental health needs.

Allocation of Chairs to specific guidelines will be determined post appointment.

Please note that Chairs may not have any direct interests (financial, non-financial professional or personal) that relate to the areas to be covered by the guideline. For further information, see NICE’s policy on declaring and managing interests for NICE advisory committees.

Please indicate in your application if you have a preference to Chair a clinical or a social care guideline, or either.

If you or any of your colleagues would like to apply, there are more details on the NICE website. The deadline for applications is 16/05/18 at 17:00. Interviews will be held on Friday 15th June 2018.

We would appreciate it if you could circulate this information widely in your organisation and to any other people or organisations who may be interested in this topic.
