Dalton McGuigan, CSP steward, found that good communication reassured a member during an investigation
A six-month long investigation had a profound impact on a member at my workplace. Through the investigation, I realised that communication and reassurance are as important to the member as knowledge of the process.
I made myself available to provide pastoral support, calling the member to discuss the case, as well as representing him throughout the investigation.
To allay the member’s concerns, I spoke to my CSP senior negotiating officer, as well as a long-standing steward at my trust, to find out what to expect, and what to consider in the member’s defence. In turn, I talked through the intricacies of the investigation process with the member, which helped to calm his anxiety. When the investigation moved to the formal stage, I scrutinised inconsistencies and errors in the investigation report and witness statements, and then represented the member as his case moved to a hearing.
The investigation was dropped on the basis that the majority of the accusations should have been dealt with informally.
The member is now looking forward to moving on and getting back to work.
He feels a huge weight has been lifted.
This case has highlighted the toll that the investigation process can take on a member’s mental health.
Checking in regularly, as well as signposting to appropriate services, was key to supporting this member.
Another takeaway for me is that help is there, should you need it.
CSP staff provided timely recommendations and reassurance that I was on track and doing everything I could.
