Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care: National Framework for Local Action (2021 - 2026)

Year published: 2021

ACPOPC are really pleased to see the refreshed Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care: A national framework for local action 2021-2026 published this week. ACPOPC are now key partners in the National Palliative and End of Life Care Partnership that is responsible for this document. We were really pleased to be invited to join this group and are encouraged by the partnership's enthusiasm for physiotherapy and the other Allied Health Professions.

Rehabilitative palliative care is explicitly mentioned within the Framework in Ambition 3 - Maximising Comfort and Wellbeing. It states: 'All members of the health and social care team should work collaboratively to maximise the person’s independence and social participation to the extent that they wish, even while acknowledging the inevitability of death.' Whilst we should expect all health professionals to take a rehabilitative approach, we as physiotherapists will often be expected to take a lead in supporting our colleagues in what can be quite a different way of thinking for some. There are some excellent examples around the country of palliative care teams embedding a more rehabilitative approach into their working systems and we hope to share more of these with you.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharper focus than ever the need for expert, holistic palliative care, including rehabilitative palliative care. The co-chairs of the partnership call for local leaders to take action to work towards these ambitions and we pass that call on to you as local physiotherapy leaders. Please use the research, policy documents and guidelines that are increasingly out there to support your advocacy for our profession within palliative care. Please get in touch with us if you need any help with this.

The publication is available on the Health Education England (HEE) Hub, the new home for all Ambitions Partnership information. All existing information and publications that were previously on the Ambitions website have now been transferred to the HEE Hub.
